Lakeshire Park by Megan Walker

I didn’t know what to expect when I started reading Lakeshire Park because this is Megan Walker’s debut novel, and I was very pleasantly surprised to find in it one of my favourite romances of the year.

Lakeshire Park was perfect in every way, from the writing, to the characters, setting and relationship development.

We are introduced to Amelia and Clara Moore whose only security in life is about to end with the demise of their bitter stepfather, Lord Gray. He has vouched to leave them nothing upon his death, and that event appears to be close due to his growing health issues.

Faced with this terrible news, it is with some relief and hope that Amelia Moore accepts an invitation by Sir Ronald Demsworth to a house party at his estate, Lakeshire Park. Amelia has no interest in Sir Ronald, but her sister Clara is quite smitten with him, and Amelia is committed to guarantee her sisters safety and happiness.

In Lakeshire Park they meet several guests, but the Wood siblings will stand out because Georgiana Wood is also invested in gaining Sir Ronald Demsworth’s attentions, and her brother, is as devoted as Amelia to help his sister achieve that goal.

With conflicting interests, the older siblings soon realize that it is best to keep the other from interfering in their sisters interactions with Sir Ronald, so they agree to spend the afternoons in each other’s company  as this will guarantee they will not interfere in Clara and Georgiana’s business.

What started as a business-like agreement soon becomes a beautiful and deep relationship which was one of the aspects I loved the most about this book. Amelia Moore and Peter Wood’s time together is filled with beautiful and touching moments where they flirt, have fun together, reveal their deepest feelings, share past memories which carved their personalities, speak of the future and what would make them happy, discuss events as they are occuring in Lakeshire etc. As all these interactions unfold in front of us, we cannot resist reading a little more to see what else the author has lined up for us. Their relationship is not shallow, it is built on a series of moments that are well built and enthralling. The reader witnesses these two people slowly falling in love with each other in a playful manner that is refreshingly different from many romances that lately seem to follow the same formula for romance development.

Apart from the romance, which was clearly one of the biggest achievements of this book, the characters were also a feature I loved., particularly Peter Wood. In a romance that has everything to appeal to Jane Austen fans, the romantic hero is as different from Mr. Darcy as would be possible, yet he is just as compelling. Peter Wood is charming, teasing and funny, but also sensitive, responsible, honourable and honest. he is perfect in every way and I must confess I didn’t miss the Darcy features even a bit.

Last but not least, I need to mention how beautifully written the house party activities are. Megan Walker incorporated in the story all sorts of activities, such as picnics, horse riding, games and competitions, dancing, and  interesting discussions which transported me into Lakeshire Park’s house party. Many of these activities were fulcral to the romance and were written with a detail that I haven’t seen in many regency romances, and this made the book interesting and lively.

Summing up, Lakeshire Park is a beautifully written and captivating romance with a unique story that will fascinate most readers. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Adiobook Narration:

Elizabeth Bennet’s Level

This is the second audiobook narrated by Justine Eyre that I’ve listened to and I must say I enjoyed this one much more. The narration style is pretty much the same, but I believe the playfulness that we can hear in  Justine Eyre’s voice is much more suited for this story. She has a very pleasant tone, and it was a nice experience to listen to her narration of Lakeshire Park.

Freebies & Books on sale

Good Afternoon everyone,

Since I got back to work it has been hard to have as much time as I would like to dedicate to this blog, so I haven’t posted any book sales list lately. However, I had some spare time this weekend and thought I could try to compile whatever I could find on sale once more.

I’ve decided to remove from this list all the books I already mentioned in previous lists because some readers told me it was confusing to know which ones were new sales and which were books they already acquired based on the old lists. So if you’d like to see what’s been on sale for some time now, please do check my previous lists. This one will not include everything on sale, only the latest ones that I could find on my research.

It is smaller than previous ones, but I hope it is useful nonetheless 🙂 Once more, if you know of any other JAFF book sale, please, do share that with everyone on the comments 🙂

Book Blurb:
She was everything he ever wanted…if only she was not his best friend’s sister.
As any honourable gentleman knows, a friend’s sister is untouchable. It is a code that Fitzwilliam Darcy has never had an issue with until now. However, Elizabeth Bennet might be enticing enough to risk not only disinheritance from his father and the displeasure of his entire family but also the loss of his best friend’s trust.
To Elizabeth, her brother’s friend, Will, is as pompous as the day is long. However, he is also enigmatic, and soon, she finds herself drawn to his complexities. Unexpectedly, she falls hard and fast for this young heir of a vast estate, but at sixteen, she has never been in London society before and is new to all its deceptions and games. Will she be able to decipher who to trust or will her heart pay the ultimate price?
.
Book Blurb:
When doing the right thing goes utterly wrong.
Elizabeth Bennet cannot rid herself of the strange feeling she has whenever she is around Mr. Darcy—and it has nothing to do with the fact that he is irresistibly handsome and intelligent. Almost nothing, anyway. People around town are disappearing, and no one seems to know why. And who was that woman Mr. Darcy was hiding at the Meryton Inn? Elizabeth has questions, and Mr. Darcy refuses to answer them.
Fitzwilliam Darcy hates deception and disguise, but to protect his cousin, that is precisely what he must do. It troubled his conscience to keep certain matters from his aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, even temporarily. Lying to Elizabeth Bennet, however, is robbing him of his sanity. Of all the women in Hertfordshire who might challenge him over missing persons, why did it have to be the one who had captured his heart and mind?
In the absence of good information, dark suggestions soon populate the town’s imagination. And when another young lady goes missing, will the town turn on Darcy, or will the truth come out—no matter who it exposes?
.
Book Blurb:
The best-laid plans of mice and men did NOT have a wife!
In this sweet Regency variation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice, Fitzwilliam Darcy’s eldest son sets out to seek a bride. Alexander Fitzwilliam Darcy is the spitting image of his father—in looks, temperament, and his inability to impress a woman not particularly wanting to be impressed.
Darcy, against the loving advice of his intelligent wife, decides to help his son along. In the process, the forever kind of love our dear couple has for each other is displayed as tenderness meets stubbornness and affection meets determination.
Come along for the bumpy ride between Darcy & Elizabeth as love blooms at Pemberley—or does it?
Book Blurb:
Large, awkward, unlovable, and destined to fail — that is who William Collins has always been told he was, and while he might have accepted the first three monikers, he’s worked hard to ensure the last one does not become true.
Kitty Bennet has never lacked for attention from gentlemen, but while she’s proficient at flirting, she has never had her heart touched by any of the potential suitors who have sat in Longbourn’s sitting room.
That is her heart was never touched until now when the awkwardly endearing heir to Longbourn takes up residence in her home. But how does one encourage a gentleman to love her when he’s seemingly unaffected by fluttering lashes and demure looks?
And how can someone as inept, as Collins thinks he is, ever win the heart of a lady as charming as Kitty Bennet?
It will take determination and a little help as well as the realization that sometimes the battle for the heart is played out in the mind.
Master of Lonbourn is part of Leenie Brown’s Dash of Darcy and Companions collection of Pride and Prejudice inspired novellas. If you like well-written sweet romance featuring an unlikely hero who must blossom from ugly duckling to majestic swan, then you will love this story about Collins overcoming the edicts of his father to become what he wishes to be while claiming the lady who is the desire of his heart.
So, put the kettle on, grab your copy of Master of Lonbourn, and slip into a world of sweet and endearing romantic indulgence today.
Book Blurb:
Mrs Bennet misses her daughters now they are all married. Therefore, she decides to invite them to Longbourn for Christmas. The only difficulty, as her husband points out, is the enmity between Darcy and Wickham.
Mrs Bennet arrives at an ingenious solution. They will have two Christmases. One on Christmas Day for Lizzy, Jane, Kitty and Mary and one on Boxing Day, for Wickham and Lydia alone.
They enjoy a festive day with four of their daughters, but when a certain uninvited Reverend arrives, Darcy and Lizzy decide to stay at a coaching inn to make room for the new arrival. At the inn they meet Wickham and Lydia. Lydia is in early labour and gives birth to a daughter at the inn. The impact on Wickham of the arrival of his new daughter is profound and surprising.
As the new parents are advised not to leave the inn by their physician, Lizzy sends a message to her father and suggest that the family visit her at the inn instead. The Bennets and their daughters hurry to the inn the next day and enjoy another Christmas on Boxing Day with Lydia and Wickham.
Only one person is disappointed – the Reverend Collins who hopes to deliver his new Christmas sermon.

All is going well until she meets Georgiana’s dashing cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam. Suddenly, hiding her identity isn’t her only problem…she must protect her heart, too!

Book Blurb:
Anne de Bourgh’s life is in danger. From her own family. Her only hope is a man who claims to be from the future. His story is impossible, yet her instincts, and her heart are drawn to this stranger. Will he save her? Or will trusting him cost her everything?
Morgan James has faced his own mortality. Now, he feels like a shadow of his former self. Without purpose. Until now.
Five years ago, his sister went through a time portal on the family estate in England, and returned with her husband, Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam. He knows going through the time portal is dangerous. He also knows Anne will die a horrible death if he doesn’t.
He intends to save her. What he doesn’t plan is to fall in love with her.
But danger has followed them. Is there no time or place where they can find happiness?
Book Blurb:
Some universal truths refuse to be ignored.
Peanut butter and jelly are a match made in heaven. Spaghetti and meatballs are best friends forever. And guys like Tyler Knight don’t go for girls like Cam Emerson.
She knew from the second she met him that he didn’t belong on her bookshelf, the six-foot-six ex-tight end with a face so all-American, it could have sold apple pie. So she shelved him next to the supermodels and rock stars and took her place on her own shelf — the one with the flannel-clad, pasty-faced comic book nerds. Most of her boyfriends have existed between the pages of books, but rather than worrying over her own lacking love life, she puts all her energy into playing Cupid, using her job at the book bar, Wasted Words, as her stomping ground.
Tyler Knight always looks on the bright side. His career-ending injury turned into a job as a sports agent. A horrible breakup led him to Cam, his quirky, smart roommate who is far more beautiful than she realizes. She’s made it perfectly clear she’s not interested in him — not like that at least — but if she ever changes her mind, he won’t hesitate. Because he doesn’t see the lines she’s drawn between them, as much as she insists that they’re there. Deep down he knows that despite their differences, they’re a match well made.
Book Blurb:
Bestselling author Staci Hart is back with a brand new romantic comedy and clever spin on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Meet the Bennet brothers, get to know Longbourne, and fall in love in this steamy enemies to lovers romcom.
Everyone hates parts of their job.
Maybe it’s the paperwork. Maybe it’s the day-to-day grind. Maybe it’s that client who never knows what they want, or the guy who always cooks fish in the microwave.
But not me. I love every corner of the Longbourne Flower Shop, every flower, every petal, every stem. I love the greenhouse, and I love Mrs. Bennet, my boss. I love creating, and I love being a florist. I don’t hate anything at all.
Except for Luke Bennet.
The Bennet brothers have come home to help their mom save the flower shop, and Luke is at the helm. His smile tells a tale of lust, loose and easy. He moves with the grace of a predator, feral and wild. A thing unbridled, without rules or constraint. When he comes home to save Longbourne, I almost can’t be mad at him. Almost.
He doesn’t remember that night I’ll never forget. That kiss, touched with whiskey and fire. It branded me like a red-hot iron. But it meant nothing to him.
Everyone hates part of their job, and I hate Luke Bennet.
Because if I don’t, I’ll fall in love with him.

Consequences by C.P. Odom

In this book C. P. Odom explores two alternate realities where the consequences of Elizabeth’s refusal at Hunsford for the characters in Pride and Prejudice are very different. We all know that one small change in the plot may have a big impact, but C.P. Odom took this idea to the extreme and wrote a book that may not be very consensual, but that is certainly unforgettable.

The first two chapters of Consequences are very similar to Pride and Prejudice, and only in chapter three the reader is introduced to some pivotal changes. It is at this moment we start to realize how the story could have taken a different turn, and when it became interesting to me.

Consequences is composed of two parts and I believe most readers will find great satisfaction upon reading the second part, which is certainly the more consensual one. I actually preferred part one, which is much darker and filled with pain and grieve, but real and deep. The ending of that first part was not a satisfactory one, but we do get closure, and I personally loved it. In it Mr. Darcy never sees Elizabeth at Pemberley, and their last encounter was at Hunsfurd when she refused his offer of marriage. We will then follow Elizabeth’s life for the next forty years, and many sad events take place as her father dies and the entire family is shunned. The reader may not want to read about this, but the truth is that this could have happened if they hadn’t seen each other at Pemberley and it made me think about the consequences harsh words may have in our lives without us realizing it.

The second part is a much happier tale and most readers will prefer it, but I confess it wasn’t very stimulating for me to read it. The characters all have happy endings, but the plot was somehow repetitive for my taste. In it Charlotte plays a big role because she talks to Elizabeth prior to Mr. Darcy’s proposal and convinces her to think matters through in case he does propose. Because of her promise to Charlotte, and the upsetting dream she had the previous night, Elizabeth’s actions are more sedate, and the upcoming events have a completely different outcome. I wasn’t as fond of this Elizabeth as I was of the Elizabeth in the first part of the book, and her love for Darcy on the first part felt more real to me.

Overall, I did like this book, especially because it did something I had never seen before and which took a lot of courage to pull through. Consequences occupies it’s own place in the JAFF universe and I must thank a dear friend for recommending it to me years ago! This is definitely one that should not be missed due to it’s infrequent approach. Not all readers will like it, but they should not refrain from reading this provoking take on Pride and Prejudice.

Audiobook Narration:

Mary Bennet’s Level

Neil Roy McFarlane is a very talented narrator and I’ve listened to other books narrated by him that I’ve enjoyed immensely, but in Consequences his narration failed to engaged be, so I’m considering it Mary Bennet’s level. It is not a bad narration, but it didn’t captivate me either.

Fortune & Felicity by Monica Fairview

Fortune & Felicity was the first book from Monica Fairview I’ve read, but after this first experience, I am definitely buying Ms Fairview’s other books (I’m looking at you Steampunk Darcy!). Fortune & Felicity was pure perfection and everything I was hoping for in this type of book, becoming one of my favourite books in 2020. The story starts 7 years after the Hunsford proposal, so we will meet older versions of Darcy and Elizabeth, and this is an aspect I’ve come to appreciate lately, especially when the characters remain true to themselves only a little wiser due to life experience, as was the case in this novel.

As you may imagine, the events after the Hunsford proposal had different consequences, and 7 years later Mr. Darcy is in need of a governess for his daughter (do not panic, the wife is long gone and it never was a love match anyway). Elizabeth, on the other hand, wants to obtain some autonomy and is looking for a governess position which will allow her to live a somewhat independent life. This mutual need will bring our characters together after all this time, and even if their situations have changed, and they are forced to have a different relationship, they both decided to give it a chance and Elizabeth becomes Miss Darcy’s governess.

The story is spent almost exclusively at Pemberley which gives the book a feeling of coziness which is something I always love, but also allows us to spend a lot of time in Elizabeth and Darcy’s presence (there isn’t much more to do at Pemberley, right?). I particularly liked to see the author dedicate much page time to Darcy and Elizabeth and to include Miss Darcy (the daughter, not the sister), in a way that was not intrusive. She is obviously an important part in the story but never steals the spotlight of ODC, and the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth takes precedence over the relationship with the child, which is exactly what I would expect on a good romance.

This book is extremely romantic, and having more mature and experienced versions of Elizabeth and Darcy allowed the author to develop this romance in a more coherent and engrossing manner while keeping it clean. However, it goes beyond romance and brings much more into the story, making it a profound and interesting book. Apart from the romance, we will be faced with beautiful depictions of people’s real struggles, namely a fathers difficulty in getting through and connecting with his daughter, and Elizabeth’s difficulty in finding her place in the world. These elements give this book a depth that is engaging and makes the reader interested from the beginning until the very end .

The secondary characters in Fortune & Felicity are definitely a plus in the story, even if they play a small role in it. Jane, for example, has a small presence in the book, but I must say she was mind blowing! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Jane being depicted like this, and I loved it! I also like the original characters that were created in this story, namely Georgiana’s husband, who grew on me throughout the book.

Fortune & Felicity is very well written and all elements on it appear in a smooth, effortless and captivating manner, but what I loved the most in this book was to see Darcy and Elizabeth falling in love with one another all over again. Instead of unrealistically showing us these characters 7 years later still madly in love with one another, in what sometimes reminds me of a teenage love, the author decided to take the reader on a journey of rediscovery where old feelings are re-kindled due to old but also new characteristics. These characters are not exactly the same people they were 7 years ago, and those small changes will make them discover how well suited they are for one another.

They will fall in love with each other not just because of the past, but because of the person they have in front of them in the present.

The characters are not too old to have been apart a big part of their lives, Elizabeth is only 27 after all, but they are old enough to make many scenes, especially the one when the finally get together, much more interesting than the ones we usually witness when they are younger 🙂

I also have to mention that the epilogue was once more perfect! It didn’t follow the trend of telling us how many children the couple had, which were their names, etc., and it proved there are other ways to finish a book telling us how happy this couple is. The ending scene is just PERFECT!

Fortune & Felicity is an extremely well written book that has the perfect quantity of all ingredients to make the reader completely rendered to it. It has romance, depth, character development and the perfect pace to make it an engaging novel. I highly recommend it to all my friends 🙂  Plus, while it is on pre-order the book has a discounted price, so I truly recommend getting it now to have it available on your kindle on April 28th 🙂

Miss Austen by Gill Hornby

Miss Austen opens in 1840 with Cassandra Austen, now in her late 60s, making a journey to the village of Kintbury with the apparent purpose of paying her respects to Isabella Fowle, who had just lost her father. But in fact, Cassandra’s real purpose is to destroy the letters that were exchanged between her sister Jane and Isabella’s mother, a dear friend of the family.

The destruction of the mentioned letters is the driver of the narrative, but it was not the fulcral point that captured my attention in this book. The letters that Cassandra discovers and reads so many years after they were originally written, and the memories they entice, are the captivating part of the book, because through them, Cassandra will revisit the most important moments of her life, transporting the reader into a past where the entire Austen family is presented to the reader at their best and their worst moments.

Jane Austen is obviously an important character in this story, but she is not the only focus of the novel, and even thought I absolutely loved the characterization Mrs Hornby did, which was authentic and intriguing, and the description of Jane’s most important life events, it was the other Miss Austen, who surprised and enchanted me the most. I always thought of Cassandra Austen as a sweet Jane Bennet, but in this book Cassandra Austen is depicted in a more profound manner, revealing not only altruism and kindness, but also intelligence, will of power and astuteness.

This book is not filled with action, nor is it an exciting page turner, and even if I would have liked it to be a little more fast paced, I truly appreciated the introspective character of this narrative. In a world such as ours, where everything is fast paced and we are fed through the overwhelming social media with an unrealistic, standardised and unobtainable concept of happiness and success, we don’t spend enough time analysing what happiness means to us. We don’t spend enough time analysing our decisions, or the path we should to take. We don’t even dare to deny the ideal of happiness imposed by society may not be what is best for ourselves. Miss Austen dwelves on all those aspects and through its main character, Cassandra Austen, we realize that it doesn’t matter what society thinks we must do, it doesn’t matter what other people think of us, what truly matters is that we feel happy about our choices, about our life and ourselves, and that we always look at what we have with appreciation. The moral of this book, whose events take place two centuries ago, could not be more pertinent and relevant in today’s society, and that is in my perspective its main achievement.

Miss Austen is an extremely well written book which reveals a thorough research into one of England’s most talented authors, but it is much more than a tribute to the Austen sisters, it is a tale of friendship and love, and a reminder of what is important in life. Despite the era that is depicted in this novel, Miss Austen could not be more pertinent in these troubled times we live in, and I highly recommend it to those looking for a book which questions the hardships, difficulties and expectation of females in society.

Audiobook Narration:

Elizabeth Bennet’s Level

Juliet Stevenson doesn’t require introductions, having narrated many of the classics, including Jane Austen’s,  as she is one of the most known and best narrators in the market.. In Miss Austen she did not disappoint with another excellent performance. With a dramatic yet delightful interpretation of all characters, she delivered once more a magnificent audiobook.

Thaw by Anniina Sjöblom

Anniina Sjöblom’s debut book is an epistolary novel, which is a difficult genre to pull through, especially if you are a new author, so congratulations are in order to Anniina Sjöblom for her courageous venture into Jane Austen Fan Fiction.

Thaw’s premise is one of my favourites in this genre, a forced marriage scenario. The story begins shortly after Mr. Collins proposal and the reader finds Elizabeth escaping into Meryton’s countryside and having the misfortune to fall into a lake. When Mr. Darcy appears and rescues her, one would think this would serve to change her opinion of him, but instead, they are forced to get married due to the impending rumours, and thus the story begins with Elizabeth hating him even more than in the original story.

This book is told from Elizabeth’s perspective through the letters she writes to Jane and Aunt Gardiner, and Anniina Sjöblom skilfully captured Elizabeth’s character throughout the entire story. We follow all her life events from the moment she is forced to marry with Mr. Darcy, until she is utterly in love with him, which was quite interesting because the reader will see Elizabeth making the same mistakes she makes in the original plot, and regretting them just like she did after visiting Pemberley.

Because we are only privy to Elizabeth’s thoughts it is harder to connect with the story, and in some parts I wish I could have seen Darcy’s perspective, but it also gave us a clear image of what Elizabeth’s life was, and it allowed the reader to get to know the main character in a more intimate manner. In this book we share Elizabeth’s solitude, but also her resilience and good spirits which will captivate the reader and make him appreciate the character development.

Gossip plays a big part in this story because it led to their wedding in the first place, and I personally liked to see the outcome some characters involved in it had. It was a beautiful conclusion to this tale, and somewhat in Austen style, which is something I always appreciate in a book.

With only 138 pages this story can be enjoyed in one afternoon, so I recommend it to those who love epistolary novels, and who want to see character progression throughout the story. This narrative is a wonderful tribute to Elizabeth, and those who like this obstinate, headstrong girl will like to see her adapt and grow in Thaw.

I didn’t actually read this book, I listened to the audiobook version, and I highly recommend it because due to its literary specificities, and the quality of the narration, with the audiobook version the reader will have a more complete experience that enhances the qualities of the book.

Audiobook Narration:

Elizabeth Bennet’s Level

This was a very easy book to narrate with only one person to impersonate, nevertheless, the narrator captured Elizabeth’s essence and tone perfectly, which was essential for this audiobook and all that we could have asked for. I recommend the audiobook version of this novel because it was a truly pleasant experience to hear this story narrated by Lillian Rachel. It felt as if Elizabeth herself was writing to us, so I believe the audiobook may be the best version of the book.

Lakeshire Park – Excerpt

Good Afternoon everyone,

I am very pleased to bring to you today an excerpt of Megan Walker’s debut novel, Lakeshire Park. This book is not a Jane Austen Fan Fiction novel, but it is a regency romance, and certain aspects of the book remind me of the characters from Pride & Prejudice, so I believe you’ll still find this interesting.

I will be reading and reviewing this book shortly and will share my opinion with you, so if your curiosity is spiked, stop by on the 29th of April for the review.

I would like to thank Mrs. Walker for visiting today and Laurel Ann Nattress for once more organizing such an interesting blog tour.

Now, without further ado, here is the blurb and excerpt of this romance:

Brighton, England 1820

Amelia Moore wants only one thing–to secure the future happiness of her younger sister, Clara. With their stepfather’s looming death, the two sisters will soon be on their own–without family, a home, or a penny to their names. When an invitation arrives to join a house party at Lakeshire Park, Amelia grasps at the chance. If she can encourage a match between Clara and their host, Sir Ronald, then at least her sister will be taken care of.

Little does she know that another guest, the arrogant and overconfident Mr. Peter Wood, is after the same goal for his own sister. Amelia and Peter begin a rivalry that Amelia has no choice but to win. But competing against Peter–and eventually playing by his rules–makes Amelia vulnerable to losing the only thing she has left to claim: her heart.

Moments later, the coachman rapped on the roof, and we looked out the east window just as the coach drove out of the lined woods and into an expansive clearing. There in the middle of the freshly cut lawn sat a grand estate, sandy- colored with four stories of parallel windows lining the front, reflecting the light from the setting sun. The double doors to the house were open. Our coach pulled into the drive, and a footman hurried out.

He opened my door and helped me down, followed by Clara. Just as my nerves started to get the best of me, a beautifully dressed, ginger-headed woman walked out to greet us. She was elegant and fair, bearing an air of authority as she approached us.

“Welcome, ladies. You must be the Misses Moore. I am Lady Demsworth, Ronald’s mother. Ronald has told me so much about you both, and it is such a joy to have you here at Lakeshire Park.” Sincerity flowed through every word, and she reached out for us, inviting us near.

“Thank you so much, Lady Demsworth.” I urged Clara ahead, following behind her. “We are very happy to be here.” “Yes,” agreed Clara. “What a lovely estate. Amelia and I have missed the countryside dearly.”

Lady Demsworth took Clara’s arm affectionately. “That’s right. Ronald told me you were raised in Kent. I am sure Brighton is a vastly different environment. I hope this visit is a comfortable reminder of fond memories.”

Clara smiled graciously. “Thank you, Lady Demsworth. It already is.”

“I am sure you’re both ready to dress, but everyone is so excited to make your acquaintance. Might I introduce you to the party first? We’ve kept it rather small in hopes of a casual gathering and creating an opportunity to become better ac- quainted with Ronald’s closest friends.”

“Of course we do not mind,” Clara said. “Mary will have just enough time to ready our things.”

I followed closely behind the two as they entered the house, comfort enfolding me like a warm, heavy blanket. I tried to place the feeling, to name the unfamiliar warmth that relaxed my heart. All I knew was that here, nestled in the middle of nowhere, I could breathe. How I hoped these next two weeks were only the beginning, that we could finally find refuge within these walls once Clara made a match with Sir Ronald.

We’d just reached the foot of the grand marble staircase when Lady Demsworth veered left. Another set of double doors, white and trimmed with gold, stood as the entrance to the bustling drawing room.

Lady Demsworth fiddled with a string of pearls around her neck as though she, too, held high hopes for these next two weeks. As we entered the room, a click of the door sig- naled to me that the clock had finally begun.

Two weeks to secure my sister’s happiness.

Megan Walker was raised on a berry farm in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, where her imagination took her to times past and worlds away. While earning her degree in Early Childhood Education, she married her one true love and started a family. But her imaginings of Regency England wouldn’t leave her alone, so she picked up a pen and wrote her first novella, A Beautiful Love: A Regency Fairy Tale Retelling which was published in 2019. She lives in St. Louis, Missouri, with her husband and three children. Lakeshire Park is her debut novel.

Darcy and Elizabeth are about to learn how “necessity” never makes a fair bargain.

When ELIZABETH BENNET appears on his doorstep some ten months after her refusal of his hand in marriage, FITZWILLIAM DARCY uses the opportunity to “bargain” for her acceptance of a renewal of his proposal in exchange for his assistance in bringing Mr. George Wickham to justice. In Darcy’s absence from Hertfordshire, Wickham has executed a scam to defraud the citizens of Meryton, including her father, of their hard-earned funds. All have invested in Wickham’s Ten Percent Annuity scheme. Her family and friends are in dire circumstances, and more importantly, Mr. Bennet’s heart has taken an ill turn. Elizabeth will risk everything to bring her father to health again and to save her friends from destitution; yet, is she willing to risk her heart? She places her trust in Darcy’s ability to thwart Wickham’s manipulations, but she is not aware that Darcy wishes more than her acquiescence. He desires her love. Neither considers what will happen if he does not succeed in bringing Mr. Wickham before a magistrate. Will his failure bring an end to their “bargain”? Or will true love prevail?

Elizabeth Bennet’s Deception – FREE

With discount at: Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

Book Blurb:

What if Fitzwilliam Darcy refused to approach Elizabeth Bennet when he observes her upon the grounds of Pemberley? What if Elizabeth permits Mr. Darcy to think her the one ruined by Mr. Wickham? What if love is not enough to bring two souls together?

FITZWILLIAM DARCY’s pride makes the natural leap to ELIZABETH BENNET’s ruination when the lady appears, without notice, upon Pemberley’s threshold to plead for Darcy’s assistance in locating his long-time enemy, George Wickham. Initially, Darcy cannot look beyond the pain of lost hopes, but when Charles Bingley demands that Darcy act with honor, Darcy assumes the task. Even so, the idea of delivering Miss Elizabeth into the hand of Mr. Wickham leaves Darcy raw with anguish. Yet, Darcy loves Elizabeth Bennet too much to see her brought low. He sets his heartbreak aside to save the woman he loves, but it is not long before Darcy realizes Elizabeth practices a deception, one Darcy permits so he might remain at her side long enough to convince the lady only in each other can they find happiness.

Their adventure takes more twists and turns than does the original “Pride and Prejudice,” but the reader will enjoy the devotion displayed by Darcy and Elizabeth as they bring Wickham to the line in Lydia Bennnet’s defense, as well as their working their way through multiple misconstructions and vulnerabilities. Darcy’s final wooing of Elizabeth brings two very private individuals to a very public declaration of their love.

Plagued with misunderstandings, manipulations, and peril upon the Great Valley Road between eastern Virginia and western Tennessee in the years following the Revolutionary War, Darius and Eliza claim a strong allegiance before love finds its way into their hearts.

The Pemberley Ball – 0,99$
With discount at: Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

Book Blurb:

Elizabeth Bennet’s acceptance of his hand in marriage presents FITZWILLIAM DARCY a hope of the world being different. Elizabeth offers warmth and naturalness and a bit of defiance; but there is vulnerability also. With characteristic daring, she boldly withstood Caroline Bingley’s barbs, while displaying undying devotion to her sister Jane. More unpredictably, she verbally fenced with the paragon of crudeness, his aunt, Lady Catherine, and walked away relatively unscathed. One often finds his betrothed self-mockingly entertaining her sisters and friends, and despite Darcy’s best efforts, the woman makes him laugh. She brings lightness to his spirit after so many years of grief.
Unfortunately for ELIZABETH BENNET, what begins gloriously turns to concern for their future. She recognizes her burgeoning fears as unreasonable; yet, she cannot displace them. She refuses to speculate on what Mr. Darcy will say when he learns she is not the brilliant choice he proclaims her to be. Moreover, she does not think she can submit to the gentleman’s staid lifestyle. Not even for love can Elizabeth accept capitulation.
Will Elizabeth set her qualms aside to claim ‘home’ in the form of the man she truly affects or will her courage fail her? Enjoy a bit of mayhem that we commonly call “Happily Ever After,” along with three alternate turning points to this tale of love and loss and love again from Austen-inspired author, Regina Jeffers.

Mendacity & Mourning – 1,99$

With discount at: Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

Book Blurb:

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a gossip in possession of misheard tales and desirous of both a good wife and an eager audience need only descend upon the sitting rooms of a small country town in order to find satisfaction. And with a push from Lady Catherine, Mr. Collins sets alight a series of misunderstandings, rumours, and lies that create obstacles to a romance between Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

This slightly unhinged romantic comedy follows Darcy as he sets off to find himself a wife and instead finds himself pulled into the mire of his aunt’s machinations and his own fascination with Elizabeth, whom he believes betrothed to another. As Meryton judges him the grieving groom of Anne de Bourgh and a caddish dallier with the hearts of others, Darcy must ferret out the truth behind his cousin’s disappearance, protect his sister from the fretful fate of all Fitzwilliam females, and most importantly, win Elizabeth’s heart.

A Lady’s Reputation – 1,99$

With discount at: Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

Book Blurb:

“Mr. Darcy, I am eager to hear your explanation for the fact that quite a few people believe we are engaged.”

It starts with a bit of well-meant advice. Colonel Fitzwilliam suggests to his cousin Darcy that, before he proposes to Elizabeth Bennet in Kent, perhaps he ought to discuss his plans with their families first.
What neither man could have predicted however was that Lord Matlock would write the news to his sister, or that Viscount Saye would overhear and tell his friends, or that his friends might slip a little and let their friends know as well. The news spreads just as quickly through Hertfordshire once Mrs Bennet opens the express Mr Bennet receives from Mr Darcy, and in a matter of days, it seems like everyone knows that Mr Darcy has proposed marriage to Elizabeth Bennet.
Everyone, that is, except Elizabeth herself.
Her refusal is quick and definite—until matters of reputation, hers as well as Jane’s, are considered. Then Mr Darcy makes another offer: summer at Pemberley so that Jane can be reunited with Mr Bingley and so that he can prove to Elizabeth he is not what she thinks of him. Falling in love with him is naturally impossible…but once she knows the man he truly is, will she be able to help herself?

A Short Period of Exquisite Feilcity – 1,99$

Book Blurb:

Is not the very meaning of love that it surpasses every objection against it?

Jilted. Never did Mr. Darcy imagine it could happen to him.

But it has, and by Elizabeth Bennet, the woman who first hated and rejected him but then came to love him—he believed—and agree to be his wife. Alas, it is a short-lived, ill-fated romance that ends nearly as soon as it has begun. No reason is given.

More than a year since he last saw her—a year of anger, confusion, and despair—he receives an invitation from the Bingleys to a house party at Netherfield. Darcy is first tempted to refuse, but with the understanding that Elizabeth will not attend, he decides to accept.

When a letter arrives, confirming Elizabeth’s intention to join them, Darcy resolves to meet her with indifference. He is determined that he will not demand answers to the questions that plague him. Elizabeth is also resolved to remain silent and hold fast to the secret behind her refusal. Once they are together, however, it proves difficult to deny the intense passion that still exists. Fury, grief, and profound love prove to be a combustible mixture. But will the secrets between them be their undoing?

Unequal Affections – 1,99$

With discount at: Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

Book Blurb:

When Elizabeth Bennet first knew Mr. Darcy, she despised him and was sure he felt the same. Angered by his pride and reserve, influenced by the lies of the charming Mr. Wickham, she never troubled herself to believe he was anything other than the worst of men—until, one day, he unexpectedly proposed.
Mr. Darcy’s passionate avowal of love causes Elizabeth to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about him. What she knows is that he is rich, handsome, clever, and very much in love with her. She, on the other hand, is poor, and can expect a future of increasing poverty if she does not marry. The incentives for her to accept him are strong, but she is honest enough to tell him that she does not return his affections. He says he can accept that—but will either of them ever be truly happy in a relationship of unequal affection?

Diverging from Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice at the proposal in the Hunsford parsonage, this story explores the kind of man Darcy is, even before his “proper humbling,” and how such a man, so full of pride, so much in love, might have behaved had Elizabeth chosen to accept his original proposal.

Thus grows the likeness, imperfect as it may be, which you see today.” Lydia Fitzwilliam, Countess of Matlock, letter to her sister Elizabeth Bennet Darcy, March 14, 1831.
Does it matter how a man fills out his regimentals? Miss Austen never considered that query. Yet, this question marks the beginning of an education…and the longest life…in the Bennet Wardrobe saga.
Lydia Bennet, Longbourn’s most wayward daughter, embarks on her quest in The Pilgrim: Lydia Bennet and a Soldier’s Portion. This biography reveals how the Wardrobe helps young Mrs. Wickham learn that honor and bravery grow not from the color of the uniform—or the gender of its wearer—but rather from the contents of the heart.
In the process, she realizes that she must be broken and repaired, as if by a kintsugi master potter, to become the most useful player in the Bennet Wardrobe’s great drama.
The Pilgrim explores questions of love, loss, pain, worry, and perseverance. All of these are brought to bear as one of the silliest girls in England grows into the Dowager Countess.
This 151,000-word novel is the seventh, and next-to-last, volume in the Bennet Wardrobe Series. Each book along the way has revealed more about how the mysterious Wardrobe has led Miss Austen’s Bennets to learn that which they need in order to take part in its ultimate mission.

“You must allow me to tell you…”
For over two hundred years, Jane Austen’s Mr. Darcy has captivated readers’ imaginations as the ultimate catch. Rich. Powerful. Noble. Handsome. How does Darcy progress from “She is tolerable: but not handsome enough to tempt me” to “I thought only of you”?
In this romance anthology, fifteen Austenesque authors assemble to sketch Darcy’s character through a series of re-imaginings, set in the Regency through contemporary times—from faithful narratives to the fanciful. Herein “The Darcy Monologues”, the man himself reveals his intimate thoughts, his passionate dreams, and his journey to love—all told with a previously concealed wit and enduring charm.

Dangerous to Know – 2,99$

With discount at: Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

Book Blurb:

Jane Austen’s masterpieces are littered with unsuitable gentlemen—Willoughby, Wickham, Churchill, Crawford, Tilney, Elliot, et al.—adding color and depth to her plots but often barely sketched. Have you never wondered about the pasts of her rakes, rattles, and gentlemen rogues? Surely, there’s more than one side to their stories.
In this romance anthology, eleven Austenesque authors expose the histories of Austen’s anti-heroes. “Dangerous to Know: Jane Austen’s Rakes & Gentlemen Rogues” is a titillating collection of Georgian era short stories—a backstory or parallel tale off-stage of canon—whilst remaining steadfast to the characters we recognize in Austen’s great works.
What say you? Everyone may be attracted to a bad boy…even temporarily…but heaven help us if we marry one.

Rational Creatures – 2,99$

With discount at: Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

Book Blurb:

Jane Austen: True romantic or rational creature? Her novels transport us back to the Regency, a time when well-mannered gentlemen and finely-bred ladies fell in love as they danced at balls and rode in carriages. Yet her heroines, such as Elizabeth Bennet, Anne Elliot, and Elinor Dashwood, were no swooning, fainthearted damsels in distress. Austen’s novels have become timeless classics because of their biting wit, honest social commentary, and because she wrote of strong women who were ahead of their day. True to their principles and beliefs, they fought through hypocrisy and broke social boundaries to find their happily-ever-after.
In the third romance anthology of The Quill Collective series, sixteen celebrated Austenesque authors write the untold histories of Austen’s brave adventuresses, her shy maidens, her talkative spinsters, and her naughty matrons. Peek around the curtain and discover what made Lady Susan so wicked, Mary Crawford so capricious, and Hettie Bates so in need of Emma Woodhouse’s pity.
RATIONAL CREATURES is a collection of humorous, poignant, and engaging love stories set in Georgian England that complement and pay homage to Austen’s great works and great ladies who were, perhaps, the first feminists in an era that was not quite ready for feminism. “Make women rational creatures, and free citizens, and they will become good wives; —that is, if men do not neglect the duties of husbands and fathers.” —Mary Wollstonecraft

Freebies & Books on sale

Good Afternoon everyone,

How are you today?

I hope you are all healthy and safe in your part of the world. Luckily me and my family haven’t been affected yet and I feel very blessed about it.

When the corona virus started spreading in my country I was sent home by my company and have been quarantined ever since. Almost simultaneously, several authors started decreasing the prices of their books, and it became harder to track all of them on social media, so I thought it would be helpful to congregate everything I could find on sale in one single place where readers could have an easy access to freebies and sales. I had the time to do it and my readers found it helpful, so this became a habit.

Today I’m back at work, even if it’s only homeworking, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to continue compiling all the sales on such a regular basis, but for the time being, here is everything I could find on sale today. I’ve checked the prices for these books in the US and UK, but I didn’t check in other stores, so if you’re using another store you may want to check the price there too 🙂 I had the help of many readers and authors who sent me information about everything they could find to, so I would like to thank everyone who made this list possible, either by reducing the prices of the books, or helping me add them to the list 🙂

Please note this may be an incomplete list, I’m sure there are more books on sale that I have missed as it is impossible to know all the price reductions that are occuring on a daily basis, but I’m also counting on you to help other readers. If you know about any other sales, please do let us know in the comments and share your knowledge with us 🙂

The Pemberley Ball – 0,99$

The Pilgrim: Lydia Bennet and a Soldier’s Portion – 1,99$

Book Blurb:

“My life has been very much like an unfinished painting. The artist comes to the portrait day-after-day to splash daubs of color onto bare canvas, filling in the blanks of my story.

The Bennet Affair – Guest Post, Excerpt & Giveaway

Hello everyone,

My guest today is Riana Everly, an author whose guest posts I always adore! We can tell Riana Everly does a lot of research to develop her stories and, in my perspective, that is always a sign of quality, which obviously increases my curiosity towards her books.

Today she will bring you a guest post regarding her recently released book, The Bennet Affair. This story is full of intrigue, mystery and spies!!! Isn’t that a different and interesting take on Pride & Prejudice? Plus, the cover is absolutely stunning, so this book is really hard to resist! But I’ll let you read the guest post and a small excerpt so you can make your own analysis 😉

A tale of secrets, sweethearts, and spies!

Elizabeth Bennet’s bedroom in the ancient tower of Longbourn has always been her private haven. So what are those footsteps and shuffling noises she’s now hearing from the room above her head? Drawn from her bed one dark summer night, her clandestine investigations land her in the middle of what looks like a gang of French spies!
William Darcy’s summer has been awful so far, especially after barely rescuing his sister from a most injudicious elopement. Then he is attacked and almost killed nearly at his own front door in one of the best parts of London. Luckily his saviour and new friend, Lord Stanton, has a grand suggestion—recuperate in the countryside and help uncover the workings of a ring of French spies, rumoured to be led by none other than country squire Thomas Bennet!
Drawn together as they work to uncover the truth about the Frenchmen hiding in their midst, Elizabeth and Darcy must use all their intellect as they are confronted with an ingenious code machine, a variety of clockwork devices, ancient secrets and very modern traitors to the Crown. And somewhere along the line, they just might lose their hearts and discover true love—assuming they survive what they learn in the Bennet affair.
The Bennet Affair is a full-length JAFF novel of about 112, 000 words.

Natural History and Bird-Watching Books

In The Bennet Affair, Mr. Darcy befriends a baron who is also a renowned ornithologist—an expert on birds—who has authored and illustrated several books on the subject. Indeed, the art and science of Natural History was something that was becoming more and more popular in England in the early nineteenth century, becoming almost a mania during the Victorian age.

One origin for this interest in nature and natural history was the Enlightenment, the philosophical movement that prioritized reason and the advancement of science. This was in some ways opposed to, but also complimentary to, the blossoming Romantic ethos of the time, which saw a move to restore people’s relationship with nature. This movement saw nature as pure and uncorrupted, an antidote to the human world, and therefore something almost spiritual. Natural Theology, as set out by William Paley in his book of that same name in 1802, emerged from this. It was the belief that natural science was proof of the existence and power of divine creation.

The popular interest in natural history was essentially egalitarian; there were groups for men and women, for workers and aristocrats, and even for children. Going out into the wild to find and identify plants, rocks, shells, and birds, became a common activity for families and organizations.

Of course, one needs books to guide the amateur along his pursuits, and books on birds were no exception. There were several available in the nineteenth century, most with exquisite artwork and excellent information on finding and identifying birds. Here are a couple of examples.

One beautiful set of plates is found in New Illustrations Of Zoology, Containing Fifty Coloured Plates Of New, Curious, And Non-Descript Birds, With A Few Quadrupeds, Reptiles And Insects. Together With A Short And Scientific Description Of The Same, by Peter Brown.

Brown was an associate of the great English naturalists Thomas Pennant and Joseph Banks. Though primarily an illustrator, he wrote the scientific descriptions of some species. His illustrations are accurate and very beautiful. These plates were published in 1776, and fifteen of the fifty plates are dated between January and May of 1775.

Another very popular book was A History of British Birds by Thomas Bewick. It was published in two volumes: Volume 1, Land Birds, appeared in 1797; Volume 2, Water Birds, appeared in 1804. These volumes are admired mainly for the beauty and clarity of Bewick’s wood-engravings, which are widely considered his finest work, and among the finest in that medium. The book was effectively the first “field guide” for non-specialists, in which Bewick provides an accurate illustration of each species, from life if possible, or from skins. Indeed, the book has been compared to works of poetry and literature, and features prominently in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre.

In this excerpt from The Bennet Affair, Darcy and his friend Lord Stanton discuss birds.

Once again, the day passed pleasantly. The thrumming in [Darcy’s] head was now almost unnoticeable, a background murmur that could well be ignored, and his shoulder too had ceased its ache, except for when it was jolted. Darcy tried to imagine the pain the short carriage ride to his home would occasion, with the rumble of the wheels over the cobbled streets, and he realised the wisdom of the doctor’s command. Instead of having his broken bones jostled through the streets of London, he was quite content to talk companionably with his host and eat the man’s excellent food.

He was rather pleased to discover that he and Stanton had many interests in common, besides birds. When not reminded of his injuries and his enforced sojourn in the baron’s house, he could almost imagine he had been invited for a visit by a friend. They talked of the war, of their estates in the northern counties—the barony of Stanton was in Lancashire, not so far from Darcy’s beloved Pemberley—and of the latest developments in science and industry. Likewise, their opinions on politics were well enough matched that, if they did not agree completely, their differences were fruitful ground for discussion rather than argument, and they enjoyed the same tastes in art and theatre.

By the evening, Darcy insisted on having some paper and a pen to write a quick note to his sister, informing her of his unfortunate encounter and assuring her of his health and recovery. “I should not wish her to hear the news from another before she sees in my own hand that I am well,” he explained. He would not be denied this wish, and the supplies he begged were consequently brought. He composed his letter, and when it was sealed and inscribed with her direction on the front, he idled with a pencil and a small scrap of paper that Stanton insisted was of no value and would be discarded.

“My word, Darcy!” that gentleman exclaimed as he wandered to the writing table to refill his guest’s port. “You are an artist! That is a perfect rendition of the African grey parrot, the Psittacus erithacus. We had one in our home when I was a lad; from the detail of your drawing, you must have had one as well. And that sketch there: That is exactly the Dendrocopus major—the great spotted woodpecker—we were just discussing! You have captured it perfectly, down to the curve of its beak and the white shoulder patches at the wings! I had no idea you were skilled with a pencil!” He hurried to one of the many bookshelves that lined the room and retrieved a large volume. The title was embossed on the leather cover in rich gold and read “Birds of Britain by Raymond Orville Fynch.” Even though not supposed to read, Darcy could not help but notice this prominent text. Stanton opened the tome with the ease of long familiarity and found the page he sought. “See here! This is my own drawing and they match exactly!”

Darcy demurred, but was pleased with the compliment. “Those are fine words from one so skilled as yourself. I have always taken pleasure in rendering small images and scenes with paint or charcoal, although I have never devoted much time to the art. Where I have poured my energy is into technical drawings.” He glanced up and was satisfied to see the look of clear interest on Lord Stanton’s face.
